Catharsis was a full song idea that I had floating around my brain and my computer for a year or so. I wasn’t too keen on using it for the EP because, at the time, the song was just too simple for my taste. The structure, the riffs, none of it really came up to my standard, but I knew it had potential. I sat the song down and, over the course of a couple months, was able to really flesh out what I wanted the song to sound like, what sort of atmosphere it should have. It was a very different experience to writing all the other songs on Heir Apparent, because of its dynamic; instead of being full energy all the way through, it has its gentler moments. Ultimately, I enjoy the song FOR its dynamic, and for the way the song really wraps up the EP like I want it too. Seriously, I wouldn’t choose any ending other than that giant vocal finish for Heir Apparent.

The vocals on Heir Apparent were all performed by me, which has yielded some very interesting responses from friends and family, as I am not usually known for my vocal ability. For The Fact of the Matter and The Host I used an MXL 440 condenser microphone, and for Walking with Purpose and Catharsis I used a Shure SM7b. I enjoyed both for different reasons, but felt that the vocals on all the songs still felt uniform in level and sound, despite their differences. On most of the tunes, I self-produced (I hit the record button, sang, and critiqued my own performances). The only song whose vocals were not self-produced was Walking with Purpose; James Nelson, the guitarist who provided all the guest solos, was my producer for the vocals on that song.
